Roses is an essentially Mediterranean town with a notable tourist and seafaring tradition. With a 3000 year history, it is located in a unique natural setting, at the north of the Costa Brava. Its origins go back to the 8th century BC with the arrival of the Rhodians and the foundation of the Greek city of Rhodes. These historical events have become the marks of identity of a modern, culturally active and generous town born of a peaceful co-existence with other peoples and civilisations. Roses will seduce you with its beautiful sunsets, the amiable and hospitable nature of its people, its historical legacy, the range of tourist, sports and gastronomic facilities and the infinite leisure and relaxation potential. Welcome! (Roses' Town Hall)
The harbour of Roses offers a beautiful walk among fishing and leisure boats. An interesting afternoon activity is to see the arrival of the fishing boats.
Roses has beaches and creeks for all tastes. The main beaches right at the center of town are not very deep and therefore ideal for children and elderly people. A bit up the coastline we find the urbanized creeks of Canyelles and Almadrava, both with a little thicker sands and therefore with very clear water but also deeper. Finally, and already in the nature reserve, we find a good amount of fairly unknown creeks. Some with sand beaches, others with stones, but all with the charm of being surrounded by nature and with relatively few bathers. Moreover, all the beaches in Roses are certified with the quality standards EMAS and ISO 14001, which guarantee the quality of water and environment.
From its foundation, in 776 bC several civilizations have occupied this space where the different layers of each era have settled in one way or another. This particularity has converted the Citadelle into a differentiated and unique monument. Within its walls there is a museum where its history is explained in six blocks: Origins, The Greek Colony, Imperial Rome, The Late Roman Period, Medieval Roses and Modern Roses.
The megalithic route of Roses allows us to contemplate a rich sample of dolmens some up to 6000 years old. Among them the largest one in Catalonia, the dolmen of the 'la Creu d'en Cobertella'.
Strolling along kilometers of coast line is one of Roses' main appeals, especially at sunset.
There are several places that offer great sights of Roses, its bay and the plain of the Empordà. Among the different viewpoints, probably the most spectacular views are to be seen from the Puig Rom and the Greeks.
